In the Shadows
by Pareitentar
Looking back, I can't really
pinpoint the time I knew I was depressed. It was slowly brought about. Not swift, like the wind, or random, like clouds. It
was like I was planted in an open field and the shadow slowly crept over me. I wasn't really aware of it then. I just have
the memories to remind me. My story really
begins with my sister. She, like all of us, had her share of problems. At twelve years old she was doing drugs, drinking,
and cutting herself. She would sneak out at night and go do drugs with friends and come home stoned, or drunk. I would lay
awake listening to her throw up, wondering where she had been, who she had been with, why she hadn't let me come along. Eventually
my parents caught her and took the door to her bedroom off. It sounds extreme, but they were inexperienced with this sort
of thing and had no idea what to do. That worked for a few months, until she got the door back and snuck out again. What I
remember most from that period of time is the constant fights between her and my parents. One thing I've learned from that
is you have to pick your battles. Sometimes you've got to accept the consequences for what you've done. But oh, no, it was
never that way with my sister. She always had to fight back. To her, there was more honor in fighting and losing than just
accepting your punishment.
